Presentation information:
We will share images and stories from our Sutton River trip that exposed former deputy Premier George Smitherman to the vast wonder of the far northern boreal, its carbon storage role, the importance of protecting it and first hand experience with threatened polar bears in their Ontario habitat.
Our presentation will relate the following story:
· Polar Bears are in trouble because of loss of ice habitat due to climate change, especially the world’s most southern population on Ontario’s Hudson Bay coast.
· Climate change is driven not only by combustion of carbon compounds (mostly fossil fuels like oil and coal) but also by human caused ecosystem degradation and destruction that releases carbon stored in soil and vegetation.
· Ontario’s northern boreal region is one of the planet’s greatest storehouses of carbon, mostly in the vast peat deposits in Hudson Bay Lowlands. This Fort Knox of carbon is threatened by mining, hydro, forestry and transportation development.
· Premier Dalton McGuinty’s promise to protect half the northern boreal and plan for sustainable development on the rest is not stopping a wild west free for all of development activity in the ‘Ring of Fire’. An enforced and effective planning process needs to get in place to make sure the carbon impacts are assessed and minimized.
Our presentation is about ½ hour plus time for questions, modified for younger audiences, and includes an opportunity for audience participation and interactive activity.
