Honour First Nations Moratorium

The Place

The traditional territory of Kitchenuhmaykoosib Inninuwug (formerly known as Big Trout Lake First Nation) or KI is located approximately 600 km north of Thunder Bay. This area of Ontario is at the heart of Canada's northern boreal forest--- one of the largest intact wilderness areas left on the planet. The Threat

In February of 2006, Canadian exploration company Platinex Inc. disregarded the First Nations' moratorium call and pushed forward with its drilling and mining activities. The KI community responded with a blockade which effectively halted Platinex's activities.  Now the community has been hit with a $10 billion lawsuit by the corporation.  KI, joined by six First Nations have called for a halt to all forestry and mining in their ancestral lands. Eleven conservation groups have also called for a moratorium until comprehensive land use planning is completed in the northern boreal region.  Read more...

Take Action!

We have the chance to map out how and where development will take place, we have the chance to do things right this time. But first, the government must honour the First Nations moratorium call. Then implement comprehensive land use planning that identifies protected areas and sustainable economic opportunities. This is how communities and nature will thrive. It is also how we will get a stable business environment for companies to operate in.
